Before the curtain rose on The Great Gatsby at the London Coliseum, copies of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel were waiting on audience seats. Each carried a sticker marking the musical’s first West End performance: a connection between the story on the page and the production guests were about to see.

For AKA UK, the agency arranging the giveaway, the idea needed a substantial book order behind it. Shulph supplied the books; AKA’s team added the commemorative stickers and prepared them for the audience.

From an event idea to 2,700 copies

AKA first approached Shulph about 2,450 paperbacks and asked to see a choice of editions. Shulph quoted five options, giving the team a way to compare the books before putting the proposal to the producers.

The team selected the Wordsworth Classics edition and increased the order to 2,700 copies. Alongside sourcing the books, Shulph worked through AKA’s supplier setup, purchase-order and invoicing requirements, and coordinated the theatre delivery arrangements.

A book that became part of the evening

The finished giveaway paired the original novel with a marker of a particular occasion. The commemorative sticker made an existing paperback personal to the event without commissioning a new edition.

The photographs tell that story: rows of books waiting in the auditorium, then copies held up against the illuminated stage and pictured alongside the show programme. The book became part of how guests captured the evening, as well as something they could take home and read.

For an event agency, that is the opportunity: choose a book that belongs to the occasion, and it can become part of the audience experience. Shulph’s role in this project was supplying the published books at scale, supporting AKA’s team in bringing its giveaway idea to life.
